The Fire Journey
July, 2006

  Summer has arrived!
Nights are short and life is filled with warmth
and energy with nature at its fullest.
Darkness has lost its power and light is triumphant—
a complete reversal from the long winter nights.

We love the ambience of outdoors on a summer night.
It can be a magical experience—
strolling along quiet paths,
camping in the wilderness,
stargazing, the steady rhythm of crickets,
the huge expanse of the sky and maybe a meteor shower.

We can hardly take it all in…
just being there in solitude.
The brief summer nights are pregnant
with intoxicating smells, lulling sounds,
and the potential for mystery.
Our imaginations fire quickly—
passions and desires are aroused.
There are times of special celebrations—
parties with friends, family reunions,
and musical events with fireworks.

Summer is a time we savor the fruits of the land.
We love the nights with our “significant others.”
We stretch out.
We reconnect to the natural world
and feed on the labor of light to our world.
Warm weather beckons us to a more laid-back attitude.
We become slower and more relaxed—
those of us that live in the northern latitudes
remember what it is like to be warm all the time.
Summer grants those of us who are overworked
and overscheduled a time to unwind and
find new sparks of creative energy.

For the soul the time is rich with creativity and vision.
We are heated up!
Passions burst upon us that spawn
and forge new pathways with such enormous vigor.
We are carried away to places
we have never visited in our internal landscape.
Fire is all around us!  We feel so alive!
It is like floating along a great river—
being carried along effortlessly by

“Another”, moving forward without control over speed or direction—
truly a fire journey of the soul.

“But because of His great love for us,
God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ…
it is by grace you have been saved.
For we are God’s workmanship,
created in Christ Jesus to do good works,
which God prepared in advance for us to do” (Ephesians 2:4-5, 10).

  One of the great stories
from the Russian tradition is the “Firebird.”
In the beginning the young hunter
picks up the “fiery feather” that lies on the ground
and his life is never the same.

In this journey of soul, we pick up fiery feathers:
we enter into realms of great risk, danger, beauty, and passion—
a spark of destiny catches us.
We find purpose.

Our soul would turn bitter,
withering away without some fiery calling.
Great ambitions and imaginations break out.
Raw emotions and heat keep our hearts open.
We are heading for trouble!
We can’t stay in this heat too long.
We would be consumed…burned up.
Fires can rage out of control.

Something extreme must occur in order to deepen our lives.
The first step in the land of fire is not to “grow up”,
but rather to open up,
take off, break out,
feel the feathers of fire warm the heart with flight!
The summer season of the soul is upon us.
